Urban Legends is a multi-platform initiative that honors the past 30 years of Universal Music Group's (UMG) urban catalog. The label imprint and platform, which came to fruition in late 2017, celebrates the artists and music at the heart and soul of hip-hop. Urban Legends recognizes the revolutionary and defining recordings primarily of the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. At its core, Urban Legends serves as both an editorial content site and ecommerce platform, delivering daily news, editorial features and franchises, and video updates on hip-hop and R&B artists within the UMG ecosystem.
Under the Urban Legends banner, rare and unreleased albums, singles, remixes, photos and video footage will be reissued from UMG-affiliated labels. Beyond reissuing classic albums as deluxe vinyl box sets, Urban Legends introduces a smart and current editorial stance on all things happening in UMG's urban catalog music world, highlighting exclusive interviews/drops, product drops, daily news, artist conversations.
Since its inception, Urban Legends has released Eric B. & Rakim’s The Complete Collection, the first ever box set for a hip-hop artist, and teamed up with Marvel to bring hip-hop variant covers to life—the first of which included releases from LL Cool J, 50 Cent, and GZA. The site has featured editorial interviews with Slick Rick, The-Dream, Jeremih, The Roots, and many more, and released products from Rick Ross, YG, Guru, and N.E.R.D., among others.
Nobody forgets the album that changed their life—that one song that defined the moment. Urban Legends remembers and reimagines what it means to be a fan, helping music lovers fall in love with their favorites all over again. We celebrate our icons, our culture, our style, our legacy, our music—and why it matters.
